Social Media content ideas that encourage engagement

You’ve built your digital marketing campaign plan, but now what? How do you get your audience to engage with your social media content? How do you create content that keeps them returning and converts them into loyal repeat customers?

You start by keeping it relevant, interesting and valuable! Then you work out what your audience wants by looking at what has worked before! You are the one who knows what works best with your exact audience, so keep an eye on engagement rates, click-throughs and conversions. If you are new to the game (or just looking for new ideas), try a few of the following and review how they perform for your business!

Cartoon of a phone with a magnet drawing in thumbs up emoji's, stars, lightning bolts and smiley faces. 4 cartoon people engage with them.
Draw in the likes and comments like a magnet with Reels, Lives, Carousels and Stories.

Reels

These short videos favoured by the Instagram algorithm remain stable currency for those keen to get in front of new audiences. Work to under 60 seconds for Instagram with one of these easy social media content ideas, or go all out and record something unique for up to 15 minutes for Facebook and upload it ready to go.

  • Talking heads videos – These may take a touch more bravery, but you can do it because you are your subject matter expert! I believe in you. A talking head video is just your head in frame talking as you would direct to your client, though often from a prepared script or plan. These are great for sharing tips, expertise as a thought leader or the benefits of your latest product for a launch.
  • Ask questions – try using a talking head reel to ask your audience questions like: Do you know which is true? Which is your favourite? How do you like your eggs? Ask them to share their response with a particular hashtag to gain momentum!
  • Just for fun – trending audio is a great way to have a little fun with your reel, and it trends for a reason. Picking a trending sound can increase your reach and make a simple montage of photos seem more exciting and engaging.

Invite user-generated content – great if you run a campaign your audience can engage with. Try creating a relevant hashtag and inviting your audience to upload, tag and share their experiences with your brand. This works to gain momentum and gets you in front of your audience’s network.

Lives

Maybe the scariest of the lot, lives are available on most social media platforms, though some have follower number requirements. They are vulnerable, and vulnerability is a great way to create connections. Lives also allow real-time communication with members of your audience who are online simultaneously. You can run lives as an impromptu affair or let your audience know when they are coming. Try using them to:

  • Announce offers – some brands like to schedule their lives at the same time every week to announce their latest releases, so customers know when to be online.
  • Go behind the scenes – Running an event? Making the product your clients love? Jump online quickly and show your audience around or even invite them to join your event or order your product right now.
  • Q&A sessions – Jump on live with a few of your most frequently asked questions first, then open the floor for whoever is online to post a question for you. This is a great way to engage with a larger audience, and the first few questions will encourage others to join in.

Carousel posts and stories

First create and post a carousel, then share it to stories a few days later. Your audience is not static, not everyone will see the post; more may see your story or vice versa.

  • Share tips and information across multiple still images
  • Show a collection of photos from your latest market or product releases
  • Run competitions or giveaways encouraging readers to share your carousel post and follow you.

Whatever form of social media content you choose – remember to include a call to action at the end (or even the beginning!). Let your potential customers know what action you would like them to take. Should they like your post, click through to your website or follow you on social media?
